Lean to or free standing?
The type of structure is very specific to each outdoor roof project. Outdoor roof areas remote from buildings will always have freestanding structures whereas lean to structures are supported by being fixed to an adjacent building. However, in some cases free standing structures are also used adjacent to buildings so that there is no direct connection between the outdoor roof structure and the building. This can be for variety of reasons such as structural limitations of the existing building or aesthetics or for other reasons.
